About

Why this artist matters now

Ryan Trecartin makes video installations of dizzying, hyper-accelerated energy, staging fragmented narratives performed by figures whose identities shift and multiply across layered digital environments. The work, developed in close collaboration with artist Lizzie Fitch, treats internet culture, consumer identity, and the instability of selfhood as both subject and formal principle. Trecartin studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, where his practice first took shape, graduating in 2004. His installations incorporate custom-built physical environments designed in tandem with the videos, making architecture and performance inseparable from the screen.
