James Earle Fraser was an American sculptor whose monumental works define the civic architecture of early twentieth-century Washington, D.C. Working in bronze and stone, he created heroic figural compositions and architectural ornaments for government buildings and public monuments. His sculptural vocabulary drew on classical restraint and allegorical tradition, adapting them to the scale and ceremonial language of American institutional spaces. Fraser's architectural collaborations established a model for integrating sculpture into the built environment that shaped American public aesthetics for decades.
