About
Why this artist matters now
Katarzyna Kobro was a Polish avant-garde sculptor and pioneer of abstract spatial construction. Working in the 1920s and 1930s, she developed a geometric vocabulary that rejected ornamental aestheticism in favor of rigorous spatial rhythm informed by scientific principle. Her multi-dimensional abstract forms anticipated modernist sculpture's engagement with architecture and the surrounding environment. Kobro was instrumental in establishing Constructivism as a defining force in Polish avant-garde practice.
