Why this artist matters now

Charles Leickert was a Dutch painter of landscape and coastal scenes, active throughout the nineteenth century. Born in Amsterdam in 1818, he specialized in seascapes and winter landscapes rendered in a naturalistic style characteristic of Dutch Golden Age painting revival. His work documented the Dutch coastline and maritime life with careful attention to atmospheric condition and light. Leickert maintained a long career spanning nearly nine decades, dying in 1907.
