Giacomo Ceruti was an eighteenth-century Lombard painter specializing in genre scenes and portraits of working people and the rural poor. Active primarily in Milan and northern Italy, he documented peasants, beggars, and laborers with a directness and dignity that departed from the moralizing conventions of contemporary genre painting. His muted palette and compositional restraint brought a naturalistic gravity to subjects typically treated as picturesque or comedic in Baroque tradition. Ceruti's social focus and technical precision established him as a significant figure in the development of northern Italian realism.
