Ask a plain question — movements, influence, education, exhibitions, holdings, peers. Every answer carries its provenance.
Jorge Oteiza was a Spanish sculptor and theorist whose abstract works in stone and iron engaged directly with Basque cultural identity and modernist form. Working primarily from the 1950s onward, he developed a distinctive approach to negative space and void, treating absence as material equal to mass. His monumental public sculptures and intimate carved stones shaped postwar Spanish abstraction and influenced generations of Basque artists. Oteiza's writings on art and spirituality were as central to his practice as his objects themselves.
