About

Why this artist matters now

Alfred Maurer (1868, 1932) was an American modernist painter who worked in oil and watercolor, developing a distinctive practice that moved between portraiture, still life, and abstract composition. Active in the early twentieth century, he engaged with Fauvism and Cubism during formative years in Paris before returning to the United States. His later work employed bold color and compressed spatial relationships, particularly in intimate domestic subjects and landscape studies. Maurer's relatively modest institutional presence during his lifetime has been gradually reassessed by later scholarship.
