Mary Ellen Mark was an American photographer known for intimate, unflinching documentary work in black and white. Working from the 1960s onward, she created extended visual narratives around marginalized communities, sex workers, circus performers, and homeless children across India, Turkey, and the American South. Her photographs combined the observational precision of photojournalism with a humanizing empathy that resisted exploitation. Mark's work appeared in major publications including Life and The New Yorker, and was exhibited internationally.
