About

Why this artist matters now

György Sándor Ligeti was an Austrian composer of Hungarian origin whose orchestral and chamber works developed a densely layered, micropolyphonic sound world distinct from serial or atonal orthodoxy. Working primarily in the postwar period, he composed landmark pieces including Atmosphères and Lux Aeterna, which eschewed traditional melody and harmony in favor of shifting clouds of tone and texture. His music found early institutional support through performances at Darmstadt and has since been widely adopted in film scores and concert halls. Ligeti's formal innovations in timbre and spatial sound design fundamentally altered compositional practice in the late twentieth century.
