About

Why this artist matters now

T.C. Cannon was a Native American painter and printmaker whose work synthesized modernist abstraction with Comanche and Caddo cultural iconography. Active during the 1960s and 1970s, Cannon developed a distinctive visual language that rejected the prevailing romantic or ethnographic treatment of Indigenous subjects in favor of contemporary formal innovation. His paintings combined gestural abstraction, bold color, and figurative elements drawn from tribal traditions and personal mythology. Cannon's career was cut short by his death in 1978 at age 32, leaving behind a small but influential body of work that helped establish Native American artists as central to postwar American art.
