About

Why this artist matters now

Tomie Ohtake was a Brazilian painter and sculptor of Japanese descent whose abstract work emerged from geometric and organic forms. Born in 1913, she developed a practice rooted in bold color relationships and dynamic spatial composition across five decades of postwar modernism in São Paulo. Working primarily in oil, acrylic, and bronze, her forms moved fluidly between hard-edged abstraction and biomorphic gesture. She became a foundational figure in Brazilian constructive abstraction and remained active until her death in 2015.
