Maiko in a Garden
1924

Tsuchida Bakusen was a Japanese Nihonga painter whose practice spanned the Taishō and early Shōwa periods. Working under his art name rather than his birth name Tsuchida Kinji, he engaged with the traditional ink and mineral pigment techniques central to Nihonga while navigating the modernization of Japanese artistic practice in the early twentieth century. His work belongs to a generation of painters negotiating the relationship between classical Japanese aesthetics and contemporary artistic innovation.
