Ernest Prater was an English painter and illustrator whose career bridged fine art and visual reportage. He gained prominence as a war correspondent artist during the Anglo-Boer War, where he documented combat and military life through drawings and paintings that combined journalistic immediacy with formal training. His dual practice as a book illustrator and painter positioned him within the tradition of late Victorian and Edwardian visual culture, where illustration and fine art maintained closer proximity than in later decades.
