Edwin Deakin was a British-American painter known for romantic landscapes and meticulous architectural studies of California's Spanish colonial missions. His sensitive depictions of these deteriorating structures catalyzed public awareness of their historical importance and restoration needs. Deakin also produced notable still lifes and helped popularize scenes of San Francisco's Chinatown, establishing himself as a documenter of the region's cultural and architectural identity during the late nineteenth century.
