About

Why this artist matters now

Frederick Warren Freer was an American painter known for his portraiture of female subjects, often modelled by his wife Margaret Cecilia Keenan. After studying at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under established masters, he developed a practice of extensive exhibition across the United States from the 1870s onward. Based successively in Chicago, New York, and European centers including Paris and Italy, Freer sustained a career devoted to the refined representation of his sitters, particularly women.
