1850 · paper

Edward Bird was an English genre painter who challenged the dominance of Sir David Wilkie in early 19th-century London before shifting to history painting, with a specialisation in battle scenes. Based primarily in Bristol, he became a central figure around whom the Bristol School of artists formed. His genre works depicted everyday domestic and social life with narrative specificity characteristic of the period.
