About

Why this artist matters now

Sesshū was a Japanese Zen monk and ink painter whose landscapes synthesize Chinese pictorial traditions with distinctively Japanese formal restraint. Working in the 15th century from Yamaguchi, he developed a signature approach combining bold, emphatic brushwork with flattened spatial construction that privileges calligraphic gesture over illusionistic depth. His paintings of landscapes, portraits, and birds and flowers channel Zen Buddhist philosophy through the economy of the medium itself, where absence of color and minimal detail carry spiritual weight. He remains a foundational figure in Japanese ink painting.
