Robert Benecke was a German-born American photographer based in St. Louis who documented infrastructure and portraiture during the latter 19th century. His subjects ranged from railroad lines and bridges to steamboats and civic architecture, capturing the industrial transformation of the American Midwest. Among the earliest American practitioners of the artotype process in the early 1870s, he gained recognition for his technical innovations and editorial contributions to photographic journals.
