Why this artist matters now

Enkyo was an Edo-period designer of ōkubi yakusha-e, large-format bust portrait prints depicting kabuki actors in woodblock. Only seven works survive, all from the late 18th century, divided by scholars into two distinct groups based on signature variation. The second group forms a coherent set depicting three brothers from a single play, suggesting a focused commission rather than a prolific career. Enkyo's identity remains uncertain, with historical speculation ranging from student of Sharaku to the master himself, or possibly a kyōgen playwright working across media.
