About

Why this artist matters now

Soga Shohaku was an Edo-period painter who deliberately revived the brush techniques of the Muromachi period, an aesthetic already archaic by his lifetime. His paintings rendered prominent figures as grotesque, monstrous forms, a radical departure from the refined portraiture conventions of his contemporaries. Working against the prevailing tastes of eighteenth-century Japan, Shohaku pursued an aggressively archaic visual language that transformed historical subjects into unsettling, distorted presences.
