About

Why this artist matters now

Constantin Guys was a French watercolor painter and illustrator who documented the Crimean War as a correspondent for British and French newspapers. Working primarily in watercolor and ink, he captured scenes of military life and urban leisure with a rapid, gestural line and a reporter's eye for incident rather than sentiment. His work entered the MoMA collection through the Lillie P. Bliss bequest, establishing his place within early modern European illustration and war reportage.
