About

Why this artist matters now

Henri Gaudier-Brzeska was a French sculptor who pioneered direct carving, working stone and wood with a deliberately rough, primitive aesthetic that rejected academic refinement. His approach treated the material's inherent qualities as central to form rather than as passive substance to be smoothed and finished. Active in the early twentieth century, he developed a sculptural language rooted in non-Western and archaic sources, creating compact, abstracted figures that influenced modernist sculpture across Europe. His practice was cut short by his death in World War I at age twenty-three.
