About

Why this artist matters now

Thomas Girtin was an English watercolourist and etcher who elevated the medium to a major fine art form in the early nineteenth century. Working alongside and in competition with J.M.W. Turner, he developed a distinctive approach to landscape that moved watercolour beyond topographical convention toward expressive atmospheric effect. His work has been exhibited at MoMA and established a foundation for the tradition of British landscape painting that would define the century.
