About

Why this artist matters now

Abdias Nascimento was a Brazilian artist, activist, and playwright who created work addressing Afro-Brazilian identity and the legacy of slavery. Working across painting, sculpture, performance, and theater from the 1940s onward, he developed a visual and performative practice rooted in Black consciousness and cultural resistance. His work refused the aesthetic conventions of mainstream Brazilian modernism, instead centering the experiences and spiritual traditions of the African diaspora. Nascimento's artistic practice was inseparable from his political engagement as a founding figure in the Brazilian Black movement.
