Hélio Oiticica was a Brazilian visual artist and theorist central to the Neo-Concrete Movement who developed immersive environmental works that positioned the viewer's body as essential to meaning-making. His Parangolés, wearable textile sculptures, and Penetrables, walk-through installations like Tropicália, rejected the separation between art object and participant. Working across painting, sculpture, and installation from the 1950s until his death in 1980, Oiticica's practice merged constructivist principles with the sensory and social dimensions of lived experience. His work remains foundational to contemporary installation and participatory art.
