About

Why this artist matters now

Federico Zuccaro was an Italian painter and draughtsman whose work exemplified late Mannerism across Italy, Spain, France, the Spanish Netherlands, and England. Active from the mid-16th century onward, he moved fluidly between painting, drawing, and architectural design, establishing himself as a major figure in the transition from High Renaissance toward the Baroque. His practice spanned portraiture, large-scale narrative fresco cycles, and theoretical writing on art. Based in Sant'Angelo in Vado, Zuccaro's international mobility and versatility made him one of the most influential Italian artists of his generation.
