Why this artist matters now
Hyegyeong Choi (b. 1986, Seoul) is a South Korean painter based in Brooklyn whose work examines body image, gender, sexuality, and identity through surreal, lush figures and grotesque imagery. Working in egg tempera and pigments, she builds images with expressive brushwork and complementary color pairings chosen to create disharmonic effects. Her paintings address societal beauty standards and cultural taboos around sexuality, and have been the subject of censorship in Korea. Choi holds a BFA from Chung Ang University, Seoul, and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She has held solo exhibitions internationally, including at Harper's in New York (2024, 2022), Carl Kostyál in London (2023), Shelter Gallery in New York (2021), and Slow Gallery in Chicago (2020).
