Why this artist matters now
Imao Keinen was a Japanese painter and woodblock print designer working in the shin-hanga tradition during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His practice bridged traditional ukiyo-e aesthetics with modernist compositional innovations characteristic of the movement. In 1904 he was appointed Imperial Household Artist, a recognition of his standing within Japan's artistic establishment. Keinen's prints and paintings are marked by refined color work and attention to seasonal and narrative detail.
