Jan van Kessel the Elder was a Flemish painter active in Antwerp during the mid-17th century who worked across multiple genres including insect studies, floral still lifes, marines, landscapes, allegorical compositions, and animal scenes. A member of the Brueghel family, he drew subjects and compositional approaches from earlier Flemish painters including his grandfather Jan Brueghel the Elder, Daniel Seghers, Joris Hoefnagel, and Frans Snyders. His works were collected throughout Europe by merchants, nobility, and other patrons during his lifetime.
