Ask a plain question — movements, influence, education, exhibitions, holdings, peers. Every answer carries its provenance.
João Cutileiro was a Portuguese sculptor whose monumental marble nudes became objects of public controversy in post-war Portugal. Working primarily in marble, he created large-scale female figures distinguished by their direct sensuality and formal boldness, challenging prevailing social and cultural conventions of his time. His work occupied a singular position between modernist abstraction and representational figuration, marked by smooth, voluptuous forms carved from stone.
