About

Why this artist matters now

Lili Elbe was a Danish painter whose work emerged from Copenhagen's early twentieth-century artistic circles. Born Einar Wegener, she transitioned in the 1920s and became one of the first known recipients of gender-affirming surgery. Her paintings, executed in oils and watercolors, reflected both the modernist currents of interwar Scandinavia and the psychological intensity of her lived experience. Elbe's legacy extends beyond her artistic output to her courage in publicly claiming her identity during a period of profound social hostility toward transgender people.
