Girl Reading by a Waterfall
1984

Ask a plain question — movements, influence, education, exhibitions, holdings, peers. Every answer carries its provenance.
Marie Bashkirtseff was a Russian-born painter who worked in Paris during the 1870s and 1880s. Born into a noble family in the Russian Empire, she emigrated to Paris as a young woman and developed her practice within the city's academic painting circles before her death at 25. Her brief career coincided with the emergence of plein-air painting and salon realism in France, positions she engaged with directly through her studies and exhibited work.
