Nathaniel Hurd was a colonial American engraver and goldsmith whose copper plates and silver work established the visual language of early American print culture. Active in Boston from the 1750s until his death, he produced ornamental engravings, bookplates, and currency designs that balanced European rococo refinement with emerging colonial commercial demands. His technical precision in both metal and print media made him a foundational figure in establishing professional printmaking as a distinct trade in pre-revolutionary America.
