Paul César Helleu (1859, 1927) was a French painter and printmaker known for his pastel portraits and decorative murals executed in a refined Belle Époque style. Working primarily in soft pastel, he developed a signature technique of delicate, feathery line work that captured both the material textures and psychological presence of his sitters, predominantly drawn from Paris's aristocratic and theatrical circles. His large-scale compositions and commissions established him as a key figure in late nineteenth-century French society portraiture.
