Robert Hughes was an American art critic and cultural commentator whose combative, erudite essays shaped discourse on contemporary art and architecture from the 1970s onward. A fierce advocate for figurative painting and skeptical of institutional trends, he examined the relationship between art, power, and public life with particular attention to Australian culture and colonial legacies. His writing refused easy consensus and brought an uncompromising voice to debates over modernism and institutional authority.
