Robert Malaval was a French photographer and performance artist whose practice treated the body as both subject and material, documenting ritualistic and durational actions in austere conditions. Working in the 1960s and 1970s, he anticipated the body art and performance documentation practices that emerged from postwar conceptual art. His photographs and documented performances operated with minimal intervention, allowing physical endurance and repetition to carry conceptual weight.
