Shelby Lee Adams is an American photographer born in 1950 whose practice centers on documentary portraiture of Appalachian communities. Working primarily in black and white, Adams develops extended relationships with his subjects across decades, creating intimate formal portraits that resist stereotypical representation of rural poverty. His photographs privilege dignity and psychological presence over sociological narrative. The sustained, collaborative nature of his practice distinguishes it from conventional documentary photography.
