About

Why this artist matters now

George Clausen was a British painter and printmaker whose rural landscapes and agricultural scenes conveyed a spare, honest naturalism grounded in careful observation of light and labour. Working across oil, watercolour, etching, mezzotint, and drypoint, he developed a distinctive graphic vocabulary that moved between atmospheric subtlety and bold tonal contrasts. His work emerged during the late nineteenth century, when industrial expansion was reshaping the English countryside. He was knighted in 1927.
