Svetlana Alpers is an American art historian whose scholarship has fundamentally altered the study of Northern European painting and visual culture. Her research centers on Dutch Golden Age representations of perspective, image-making, and the epistemological stakes of painting itself. Her work established new frameworks for understanding how seventeenth-century artists conceived the relationship between vision, knowledge, and pictorial form.
