William Painter was an American inventor and industrial designer whose patents fundamentally shaped beverage packaging and storage in the late nineteenth century. Born in 1838, he developed the crown bottle cap in 1891, a crimped metal closure that became the standard for carbonated drinks and established the basic mechanism for mass-produced bottling. His work bridged mechanical engineering and commercial design, creating systems that enabled the rapid expansion of the soft drink and brewing industries. Painter held over 80 patents across packaging, sealing, and dispensing technologies.
