Kilchberg altar: John the Baptist

Bartholomäus Zeitblom was a German painter active in Swabia during the late 15th and early 16th centuries, specializing in panel painting and altarpieces rendered in tempera and oil. His work exemplifies the transition from International Gothic to early Renaissance idiom, characterized by intricate figural compositions, luminous color, and narrative detail. Zeitblom's formal training and workshop practices remain largely undocumented, though his surviving paintings suggest engagement with Flemish and Italian conventions. He worked primarily for ecclesiastical and patrician patrons across the Upper Rhine region until his death in Ulm in 1520.
