Valentin Serov was a Russian painter and portraitist whose work bridged academic realism and modernist sensibility in early 20th-century art. Born in Moscow in 1865, he became known for incisive portrait paintings and historical compositions that combined rigorous draftsmanship with psychological acuity. His figures, rendered in oil with a restrained palette and precise brushwork, capture both physical likeness and inner temperament. Serov's career spanned the late Imperial period and he remained influential in Russian visual culture until his death in 1911.
