The Underground’s initial gift to the Art Institute contained all four of the first posters Edward McKnight Kauffer created in 1915, shortly after his arrival in London. The gift also contained a disproportionate number of other posters by him. This is one piece of evidence that Kauffer, who had studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1912 and 1913, played a role in encouraging Frank Pick to donate these posters to the museum.
