Alfred Stieglitz, 1 Jan 1864 - 13 Jul 1946

Photography

Alfred Stieglitz pioneered artistic photography in America, establishing the photograph as a medium capable of expressing personal vision and emotional nuance rather than mere documentation. Working primarily in black and white from the 1890s onward, he developed a practice centered on cloud formations, urban geometry, and intimate portraiture, often returning to the same subjects across decades. His gallery 291 in New York became the primary venue for advancing modernism in photography and related media. Stieglitz's technical mastery of the print, combined with his insistence on the artist's hand in every stage of production, fundamentally altered photography's cultural status.
