Ivan Bilibin was a Russian illustrator and stage designer whose detailed ink drawings and watercolors brought Russian folklore and literary narratives to vivid life. Working primarily in the early twentieth century, he developed a distinctive approach combining Byzantine and folk art traditions with Art Nouveau ornament, creating densely patterned borders and intricate figure work. His illustrations for Russian fairy tales and his set designs for the Ballets Russes established him as a defining visual voice of Russian cultural identity.
