The gleaming chrome surface and overtly geometric form of these candlesticks is emblematic of machine-age modern design in America. Helen Hughes Dulaney was one of the few women working in the field of industrial design in the first half of the 20th century. She designed objects for the home and industry including tableware for the streamlined train, the Burlington Zephyr. Dulaney stopped designing in 1937 and examples of her work are rare. Only one other pair of these two-tiered candlesticks is known.
