Max Penson
Max Penson was a Russian photographer active in Central Asia during the Soviet era. Working primarily in portraiture and documentary photography, he documented the social and cultural transformation of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan from the 1920s onward. His black-and-white images capture both the everyday life and official state projects of the region during a period of radical modernization. Penson's archive represents a significant visual record of Soviet Central Asia in the early-to-mid twentieth century.
