
Lyrique No. 31: Sorrowful Excitement
<p>Onchi Kōshirō produced many works titled, like this one, with a variation on Lyric. He explained this choice for one series of prints by saying, “Art is not something that can be grasped by the mind, it is understood by the heart . . . [and] I will call this kind of work a ‘lyric.’” The muted palette of this particular work conveys melancholy while the angular black shapes and layered gray forms hint at movement.</p>

Kōshirō Onchi , who is also known as Onchi Kōshirō was Tokyo-born Japanese artist who is best known for his prints. He was the father of the sōsaku-hanga movement in twentieth-century Japan, and a photographer. His work was part of the painting event in the art competition at the 1932 Summer Olympics.
