María Freire developed a rigorous vocabulary of interlocking planes and precise color relationships in oil on canvas, working in geometric abstraction without representation. A pioneering figure in concrete abstraction across Latin America in the postwar period, she treated the canvas as an autonomous field of structural and chromatic inquiry. Her work maintained a distinctly South American sensibility while participating in international discourse around non-objective painting. Freire remained committed to this formal approach throughout her six-decade career.
