Unica Zürn
Painting
Unica Zürn was a German painter and graphic artist associated with the Surrealist and Art Brut movements. Working primarily in ink, watercolor, and mixed media, she developed a distinctive visual language of densely layered, hallucinatory compositions featuring obsessive patterns, cryptic symbols, and biomorphic forms. Her work emerged from intensive periods of automatic drawing and was often accompanied by her own written texts that blurred the boundary between visual and linguistic expression. Zürn's practice remained largely independent of institutional art structures until late in her career.
